The SPF Debate

The SPF Debate

While the debate has long been settled as to whether SPF is necessary or not (to reconfirm: YES! EVEN ON RAINY DAYS! EVEN IN WINTER!!), the argument as to the best way to deliver it continues to fuel beauty blogs at the beginning of every summer season. We are no longer limited to the milky-white lotion that greases up any makeup applied overtop as the horizons have broadened greatly to include 2 different categories of sunscreen and a variety of products under each. Physical or "mineral" sunscreens are one route to go, as they use UV filters to reflect, scatter and block the sun’s harsh rays, and chemical sunscreens are the second route, utilizing active ingredients to absorb UV radiation, thus preventing them from penetrating the skin. These 2 categories then open up a dizzying array of products to deliver the UV protection - lotions, creams, tinted moisturizers, sprays, powders, fluids, wipes, the list is endless.

I used to wear the Cetaphil SPF 50 day and night (yup, I applied it during my night time routine as well!) but it does get a little slick after a while so I started venturing out and trying new products. It wasn't until this summer that I finally hit the big money with La Roche-Posay Anthelios Ultra Fluid Lotion -- it was like the heavens opened up and angels sang! I've worked really hard to get my skin to a place where I feel comfortable sans makeup but I always feel like I need a tiny bit of color correction, no matter what, and this mineral-based fluid delivers just that, plus a powerful SPF 60. However, the consistency is quite sheer (aka thin + runny), so I wouldn't exactly call this a lotion like the name suggests. Regardless, it absorbs beautifully to a finish that's equally matte and glowy and makes skin look freakin' stunning. A quick swipe of bronzer and blush over top and I am out the door in minutes!

I've also recently heard wonderful things about a Bioré SPF that you can find in Japan - or on Amazon. Curious to try it but I haven't pulled the trigger on ordering it yet!
